主流媒体开始注意到下周以太坊合并的重要性，将其描述为一场“重大改革”，可能会加速加密货币的采用，或者如果合并失败，会给整个市场带来灾难性的冲击。
自最初的以太坊白皮书以来，合并一直在进行中，涉及从电力密集型工作量证明(PoW)共识机制转移到高效的权益证明(PoS)，而不会对以太坊区块链造成任何重大破坏。
美国商业刊物《福布斯》称这种不停机升级类似于“[改变]飞行中的宇宙飞船的引擎”，Swan Bitcoin首席执行官Cory Klippsten对《华尔街日报》发表了类似的评论，称升级就像“试图修理飞行中的飞机”。
一些媒体强调，这次升级可能充满风险，他们都担心，一个错误的举动可能会对该网络以及以太坊区块链上的去中心化应用程序(DApp)的未来造成“灾难性”后果。

英国媒体Evening Standard表示，加密货币交易员在即将到来的合并前一直“屏住呼吸”，因为升级失败可能会让整个加密货币生态系统“处于危险之中”。
根据DefiLlama的数据，以太坊网络占据1500亿美元稳定币市值的大部分，以太坊DApp的总锁定价值约为330亿美元。
EndoTech首席执行官兼联合创始人Anna Becker告诉Evening Standard，如果出现导致该区块链暂停运行的问题，“该行业的生存将相当棘手”：
“以太坊是许多公司管理其区块链的基础设施，所以如果出现问题，行业就会停止……对行业来说，在这段时间里生存下来将会相当棘手。”
《华盛顿邮报》认为，与10多年来安全性得到验证的PoW相比，PoS机制“经历的战斗考验更少”，“可能会发现新的漏洞”。
