1979年，英国科学家沃格尔用大小相同的许多圆点代表向日葵花盘中的种子，根据斐波那契数列的规则，尽可能紧密地将这些圆点挤压在一起，他用计算机模拟向日葵的结果显示：若发散角小于137.5°，那么花盘上就会出现间隙，且只能看到一组螺旋线；若发散角大于137.5°，花盘上也会出现间隙，而此时又会看到另一组螺旋线。后来，科学家又发现，植物的花瓣、萼片、果实的数目以及其他方面的特征，都非常吻合于一个奇特的数列——著名的斐波那契数列：1、2、3、5、8、13、21、34、55、89……
